DOJ Officials Dismissed Following Trump’s Reinstatement
On January 28, 2025, the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) dismissed several officials involved in federal criminal prosecutions against former U.S. President Donald Trump. These prosecutions, led by former Special Counsel Jack Smith, have now been dropped.
The dismissals came just a week after Trump was sworn in for his second term in the White House. Speaking to NBC News, a DOJ official confirmed that on January 28, 2025, Acting Attorney General James Mark Henry had suspended the duties of several DOJ officials who played key roles in prosecuting Trump.
The official further stated that Henry did not believe these officials would faithfully implement the president’s agenda. The DOJ has not disclosed the number or identities of those dismissed. However, NBC News reported that among them were professional prosecutors such as Molly Gon, J.P. Cony, Annie Namara, and Maris Domand.
In an interview with NBC News, Chief Justice J.V. explained that these prosecutors were dismissed because they had pursued “unacceptable” cases. Fox News also reported that Mark Henry had dismissed more than a dozen officials involved in Special Counsel Jack Smith’s prosecution efforts against Trump.
Trump Announces Executive Orders to Strengthen U.S. Military
President Donald Trump has announced plans to sign an executive order to develop an advanced missile defense program known as the Iron Dome Shield.
Speaking on January 27, 2025, at a closed-door meeting with Republican lawmakers at his resort in South Florida, Trump pledged to bolster the U.S. military’s assets.
“We must have a strong national defense, and soon, I will sign four new executive orders,” Trump declared.
The first order aims to build a modern missile defense system to protect American citizens. The second and third orders will focus on abolishing diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, as well as removing transgender ideology from the U.S. military.
The fourth order will reinstate military personnel who were discharged for refusing to comply with COVID-19 vaccine mandates. Approximately 8,000 U.S. service members were dismissed between August 2021 and January 2023 for refusing the vaccine.
According to Reuters, these executive actions mark a “tsunami” of policies implemented by Trump since his return to the White House on January 20, 2025.
Mexico Reacts to Trump’s Mass Deportations
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum announced on January 28, 2025, that Mexico had received approximately 4,094 deported individuals from the U.S. within the first week of Trump’s new term.
While these deportees come from various countries, Sheinbaum stated that most of them are Mexican nationals.
Sheinbaum and her administration have expressed disapproval of what they call the “unilateral deportations” carried out by the U.S. government. In December 2024, she emphasized that her priority was to repatriate Mexican citizens rather than accept deportees from other nations.
Sheinbaum noted that under former U.S. President Joe Biden, Mexico had previously accepted deported individuals from Nicaragua and Haiti.
Her remarks come at a sensitive diplomatic time, as Latin American nations brace for Trump’s second term, during which he has promised mass deportations and a renewed “America First” foreign policy.
U.S. and Russia: Negotiations Over Ukraine?
According to Military Summary, discussions are emerging about potential negotiations between Russia and Western countries regarding Ukraine.
Lieutenant General Banos, head of Ukraine’s Defense Intelligence, warned that if negotiations between Russia and the West do not begin before the summer of 2025, Ukraine might not survive.
Meanwhile, Russian forces continue their advance, securing victory in Velika Novinka. Reports suggest that Russia’s General Staff is planning further offensives beyond the Dnipro River.
Although Ukrainian officials have not acknowledged losing certain territories, reports indicate that Russian forces are making gains in Chasiv Yar. Some sources claim that Moscow’s troops have seized new positions in the region’s forests, though no official confirmations have been made.
Russia’s Defense Ministry has confirmed that its forces have gained control of Nikolayev Darino, marking another significant success in their ongoing campaign.
Colombia Agrees to Accept U.S. Deportees
On January 28, 2025, the White House announced that Colombia had agreed to accept deported individuals from the U.S., avoiding potential sanctions that Trump had previously threatened.
Earlier that day, Trump had warned of tariffs and economic sanctions if Colombia refused to accept deported individuals.
The White House stated that Colombia had accepted all of Trump’s terms, including allowing deportations via military flights without limitations or delays.
In response, Colombian Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo confirmed that Colombia had reached an agreement with the U.S. and was preparing flights to facilitate the return of Colombian deportees.
According to the White House, this agreement demonstrates that the U.S. “is respected again” and sets a precedent for other nations to cooperate in accepting deported nationals.
Trump’s Next Move on TikTok
President Donald Trump also revealed that he is in negotiations regarding the future of TikTok in the U.S. and that a decision will be made within the next 30 days.
“Many important people are talking to me about buying TikTok,” Trump stated. “Congress has given us 90 days to resolve this issue, and if we can save TikTok, I think that would be good.”
According to Reuters, Trump’s administration is working on a rescue plan for TikTok, which involves a partnership with Oracle and a group of external investors to gain control of the app’s U.S. operations.
Sources indicate that Oracle would oversee data collection and software updates, ensuring that ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese parent company, remains a shareholder but with limited influence.
Trump emphasized that while discussions are ongoing, he has not yet spoken with Oracle’s CEO Larry Ellison about the potential acquisition.
Trump’s Controversial Proposal for Gaza
In another notable statement, Trump suggested a drastic solution for the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas, proposing that Jordan and Egypt should accept Palestinian refugees from Gaza.
However, Hamas, Jordan, and Egypt have all rejected this idea.
In a recent phone call with Jordan’s King Abdullah, Trump reportedly said:
“I told him that I want him to take in more people. Right now, Gaza is a disaster zone. I want him to take the people in.”
Trump added that he also wanted Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi to accept more refugees.
“You’re talking about 1.5 million people, and we will clear the entire area,” Trump stated.
Hamas immediately denounced the idea, calling it “brutal” and a violation of human rights.
A Hamas spokesperson declared that the Palestinian people will not accept any forced displacement, even under the pretense of humanitarian efforts.
